The Future Starts Here

Sustainability

We are committed to making Ringway a greener, healthier place to learn as well as doing our bit to fight climate change and promote sustainability. We have published an action plan listing the wide range of ongoing initiatives we are already doing, as well as our plans to for future projects which will embed sustainability in everything we do.

Eco Club

We recently relaunched our Eco Club, where a committed group of students with an interest in environmental issues have come together to put some of our sustainability plans into reality.

Our first activity was to join in a council litter pick in Culmere Park to make sure that our local area is safe, clean and attractive. We also co-ordinated a competition to design a new poster for a campaign "Love Where You Live", encouraging everyone to take pride in their local environment.

We have also started planting flowers and vegetables around the school grounds and we have lots of plans to make the school look much greener.

And we've got loads of ideas what to do next, which include:

  • Campaign against single use plastics in school
  • Initiatives to increase the types and amounts of recycling in school
  • Ideas for cutting carbon use
  • Working with the catering team to reduce the amount of food waste
  • Embedding sustainability themes into the academic curriculum.

Our School Farm

Did you know that we have a school farm at Ringway! As well as planting a range of different fruit and vegetables, we are also lucky to have four chickens who live in a large free-range area right next to our canteen! Our chickens are cared for by a group of responsible students who make sure the chickens are fed, watered and healthy every single day.

Wildlife Trust

We have built a partnership with Hayley from our local Wildlife Trust, who is teaching us about the various plants and animals that can be found in the school grounds and what we can do to help them thrive.

Our Year 3 classes are participating in Championing Nature Workshops which take place once a season to understand how the various species adapt to the changing conditions. Hayley has also been providing our Year 4 and 5 classes outdoor outreach experiences where pupils learn about local wildlife and what they can do to help them out.
