We value language learning and exploring other cultures here at Ringway, and it is an important part of our curriculum. Since September 2014, learning a language has been compulsory for children in Key Stage 2.

Our chosen language is Spanish, with a view to laying the foundations for future language learning. We intend to develop the children’s curiosity about other cultures and interest in another language, which they may not experience otherwise. We follow the Primary Languages Network scheme to deliver this, and have access to their excellent virtual learning environment. This allows for interactive and engaging teaching, and access to up-to-date resources.

This shows the vocabulary the children will learn throughout the year in their Spanish lessons. 

In Key Stage 2 languages is taught by our skilled and knowledgeable native speaking Spanish specialist language teacher - Miss Laura from the Primary Languages Network language teacher service. Each KS2 class has a 30 minute lesson with her each Monday or Tuesday. Class teachers also use Spanish in their daily routines, embedding the language into their classroom environment and using it to extend the children’s knowledge beyond their discrete language lessons.

Lessons are planned to develop children’s skills in the following areas –

• Oracy – speaking, listening and spoken interaction
• Literacy – reading and writing
• Intercultural understanding

Though languages is not a statutory subject in EYFS and KS1, the children explore languages through songs and games in the target language, to excite and enthuse them about language learning. We also use Christina - our Spanish puppet in EYFS, and Diego - our Spanish footballer puppet in KS1 to help us learn Spanish. 

In Autumn 2 we offer a Language Explorers Club at lunch time for a group of Year 2 children. This gives these children extra opportunities to engage in language learning in a small group through exciting games and activities.

As a whole-school, we also celebrate languages through events such as 'El Carnaval', our whole school Spanish carnival event, and the European Day of Languages, in order to promote a love of language learning and understanding of other cultures in exciting and engaging ways.
