Maths
Our Vision
At Ringway, we believe that every child can be successful in mathematics. Our vision is to develop confident, curious and resilient mathematicians who enjoy problem-solving and see the value of maths in their everyday lives. Through our Mastering Number programme in Reception to Year 2, we aim to build strong foundations in fluency, number sense and mental strategies, enabling all children to develop automaticity and flexibility with number. We follow White Rose Maths as our main scheme of learning and have recently begun our ‘Teaching for Mastery’ journey with the Maths Hub. Through consistent, high-quality teaching and carefully sequenced learning, our pupils develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and are able to apply them confidently across a range of contexts. In our community, we recognise the importance of maths as a gateway to future opportunity. By nurturing enjoyment, perseverance and a growth mindset, we want every child to leave Ringway with the skills, confidence and love of learning for maths that will last a lifetime.
Implementation
At Ringway Primary School, we have recently embarked on our Teaching for Mastery journey in partnership with our Maths Hub. Teaching for Mastery is an approach that ensures all children develop a deep, secure and long-lasting understanding of mathematics. Learning is broken down into small, carefully sequenced steps so that every child can move forward with confidence. Each step builds on previous understanding, helping children make meaningful connections that support strong mathematical foundations.
We follow the White Rose Maths scheme from Nursery through to Year 6. This provides a consistent and coherent maths journey for our pupils. Children encounter the same mathematical vocabulary, structures and calculation strategies as they progress through school, supporting smooth transitions between year groups. In Nursery and Reception, teachers also draw upon Development Matters to ensure that children receive high-quality teaching matched to their developmental stage. Early learning focuses on strengthening number sense, spatial reasoning, mathematical language and understanding, preparing children for future success.
From Reception to Year 2, children also receive daily Mastering Number sessions. These short, focused lessons develop deep number sense, flexibility with number bonds, and a strong understanding of how numbers relate to each other. Sessions are highly interactive and provide frequent opportunities to discuss, represent and reason, building secure confidence in early number. As pupils move into Key Stage 2, they apply this strong foundation to further develop automatic recall of multiplication facts. We use Times Tables Rock Stars to support this learning and to make practising times tables engaging and enjoyable.
Teaching is underpinned by the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract approach, enabling children to first explore concepts with manipulatives, then represent their ideas visually, before moving on to formal written methods. Lessons are designed to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills, with pupils encouraged to model their thinking, use accurate mathematical vocabulary and apply learning to a range of rich tasks.
Impact
By implementing Teaching for Mastery and following the White Rose Maths scheme, pupils at Ringway experience a clear, progressive and coherent maths curriculum. Consistent language, representations and calculation strategies across the school support strong progression and smooth transitions between year groups and key stages.
Ongoing work with the Maths Hub continues to develop staff confidence and subject knowledge, ensuring lessons are carefully sequenced and focused on deep understanding. The use of the Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract approach supports inclusion, helping all pupils build secure foundations and reducing gaps in learning.
Daily Mastering Number sessions in Reception to Year 2, alongside a strong focus on fluency and times table recall in Key Stage 2, strengthen outcomes over time. Our current Year 6 outcomes are in line with national expectations; however, our ambition is to continue improving attainment and, most importantly, to develop confident, resilient and enthusiastic learners who see themselves as lifelong mathematicians.
